A new study suggests that a million years ago, glaciers began sticking more persistently to their beds, triggering cycles of longer ice ages. Researchers find clues on the bed of the Atlantic Ocean. This, scientists agree, has been the main natural driver of alternating warm and cold periods for millions of years. However, research has shown that the Milankovitch cycles did not undergo any kind of big change a million years ago, so something else likely was at work. Coinciding with the MPT, a large system of ocean currents that helps move heat around the globe experienced a severe weakening. The four smaller inner planets, Mercury, Venus, Earth and Mars, geological activity that may have persisted until as recently as 2 million years ago. Observations of Mars show that the planet was volcanically active just a few million years ago. Fortunately for us, the water on Earth stuck around. The oldest. Planets that are rocky like Mercury, Venus, Earth and Mars may take tens of millions of years to form after the birth of the star. Once planets form around a star they are referred to as planetary systems, which are defined as sets of gravitationally bound. In the warmer parts of the disk, closer to the star, rocky planets begin to form. After the icy giants form there's not a lot of gas left for the terrestrial planets to accrete. An international team of scientists says it has discovered two new "super-Earth" type planets about 100 light-years away, one of which may be suitable for life. Located approximately 100 light years from Earth, the planet known as 2MASS J2126−8140 orbits its parent star a small red dwarf at a staggering distance of one trillion miles. The planet is around 11 to 15 times the mass of Jupiter a size that places it on the boundary between star and planet status and takes one million Earth years to complete a single orbit. "It was quite surprising to us we were able to find something so young and so far away," said Dr Simon Murphy from the ANU Research School of Astronomy and Astrophysics. "There's been a handful of wide planet-like systems discovered in the last 5 or 6 years, but this is by far the widest.".
