At first I was pondering it fairly rationally, but when I decided that there was really no trace of it and that I was stuck out in the middle of a rather dark field with some mysterious vanishing clattering contraption, I thought I'd better complete the rest of my journey with fleetness of foot. The shop was just a small villagey affair that seemed to be open to crazy hours of the day, probably because the owner had nothing better to do either. Our travel agency is Odysseys Unlimited which operates only with small tour groups of about 22-24 and always provides first-class hotel accomodations. About this time, operators expanded beyond the 12-channel dial to use the midband and superband VHF channels adjacent to the high band 7-13 of North American television frequencies. By the late 1980s, cable-only signals outnumbered broadcast signals on cable systems, some of which by this time had expanded beyond 35 channels.
I was a bit worried that it'd become too warm given that I got it out of the fridge before the conversation, but it was frosty cold outside so it would probably be frozen into a milk brick by the time I got back anyway. For a given amount of power, a higher voltage reduces the current and thus the resistive losses. Given the way I was running, I think it's quite likely that I just strode over it, which is just as well since I'd forgotten it was there. I think it's just one of those things that must have some rational explanation, but one that's so bizarre we wouldn't contemplate it. I'm not sure if there was a public right of way across the thing, but my family were on good terms with the owner and there were no crops growing in it or anything, so I was pretty sure that I was okay to cross it, and frankly with the cold I don't think anyone would've blamed me. Luckily the moon was out so I was okay and I was soon at the shop. The moon must've gone in or something because it seemed way darker in the field, and the ground wasn't as even as it had looked from the house.
Off I trotted, and it must've been late autumn because it was really dark. In fact, it was so cold out that I was beginning to regret traipsing about in the dark in the first place, so I had what is in retrospect not the best idea ever. Armstrong’s first important invention was the regenerative circuit he developed in 1912 (see photo above right). This AE-50 wall phone also was first manufactured by Phillips Electrical Works, then after 1954 by the Automatic Electric plant in Brockville. When you're used to electric streetlights all the time and then all of a sudden you're going down a hedged country lane with the odd horse snorting at you from the other side, it's quite an experience. So anyway I'd brought a few books and such along, but it's not as if I was going to read the whole time. By the time I was about half way, I was thinking perhaps it wouldn't save much time after all. There was no cable on the TV, shock horror, and though the back garden was nice and there was a football, there's only so much amusement that that can provide. The shopkeeper, a nice old lady whose name I forget, kept me talking for yonks, but eventually I paid for the two pint bottle of semi-skimmed.
Of course, everybody asked what had happened since I'd been so long (talking to the lady in the shop) and had made a rather swift entrance, so I told them what went on. I didn't find anything, and after we'd left, my family even told the owner of the field about what had happened, and she was just as mystified as the rest of us. I find that more interesting now, though, than I did then. Depending on the number of turns and the thickness of the wire you use, you can then power your coil with a 20-volt, 10-amp supply, (or a 200-volt, what is electric cable 1-amp supply if you used thin wire.) Even alkaline 9V battery might give interesting effects. If a 200-amp cable has 200 strands, then each strand actually has only 1.0 ampere. Send 1.0 amperes into the coil's connections, and you have a circular "cable" which has one ampere within each "strand", and 200 amperes within the cable as a whole.
